چکیده

This paper describes a review of automation techniques as currently practiced in the forging and forming industry. That industry has been relatively resistant to handling automation because of the severe challenges that are faced by having typically small batch sizes, extremely challenging operating conditions in terms of temperatures and pressures and lighting conditions. The paper discusses how aspects of these difficulties can be overcome and it is hoped that the specific solutions and methodology presented will find general applications in other aspects of manufacturing industry. The concept of the ‘‘Automated Forging of the Future’’ is introduced in which advanced handling, rapid tooling-change and flexibility, smart metrology, advanced sensing and intelligent gripping techniques are presented. The paper represents the distillation of work on automated forging based on the authors’ implementation of a key theme in forging automation in Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), The University of Strathclyde,

Different methods of forging; applications and obstacles

Forging is a manufacturing process that consists of shaping the metal using localized compression forces. The blows are delivered with a hammer (often an electric hammer) or a die. In this paper, different methods of forging (multi-directional forging, hot forging, near-beta forging, multi-axial forging, direct powder forging, warm forging and ring forging) are discussed. The main problems that...

Influence of Residual Stress on Fatigue Life of Hot Forged and Shot Blasted Steel Components

Hot forging is a common manufacturing process for the production of large quantities of engineering components. Residual stresses are developed in forged components as a result of various aspects of the manufacturing process, including subsequent cooling, and heat treatment. Residual stresses can significantly affect the deformation and fatigue failure of materials. Hot forged EN15R steel bars ...

Determination of Load and Strain-Stress Distributions in Hot Closed Die Forging Using the Plasticine Modeling Technique

An axisymmetric hot closed die-forging process has been studied by physical modeling technique using the plasticine. To observe the material flow pattern, layers of plasticine with different colors were used. The normal direction to the layers was considered a principal direction. The strain distribution was obtained by measuring the thickness of the plasticine layers. Based on the strain distr...
